I live in Houston, TX. I don't know how it is in your state, please talk to your hospital, they might be able to work something with you. I had surgery two months ago on both breasts caused by a massive infection. I went to the ER at the nearest hospital (which happened to be PRIVATE!!!) I was in over $15,000 in debt with no health insurance. I called the hospital many times to see if there was something out there to help me with my bill, all I got was that I needed to pay immediately or else it would to collection. My husband and I were so stressed that I even started to lose my hair (literally). I found out the my hospital had its headquarters about 2 hours away and called them. Three days later I received a letter stating that there was a charity discount that I could apply for, so I applied for it. Yesterday I got the BIG news that the application was approved and my account is now considered closed!!! Soo there is help, you just have to look for it. I'll be praying for you.
